Rock Steady at the YMCA

Rock Steady is a knockout class that provides an incredible workout, amazing friendships, and holistic support for those battling Parkinson’s disease.

60,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease annually. We are learning every day that there are ways in which people with Parkinson’s disease can enhance their daily quality of life and even build impressive power, strength, flexibility and speed! By exercising with coaches who know the ropes, you can fight your way out of the corner and start to feel and function better. Boxing works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout. These classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life.

There is a 40%+ decrease in "turning time" (the time it takes to make a 360-degree turn-- and a metric that illustrates one's motor ability) for participants of 3 months, twice-weekly physical therapy sessions.

From Kim Hess at our Downtown branch:

"The first few classes all of the participants learned a lot about each other and their journey with Parkinson's. They would share their stories of various treatments they have heard about and what has worked for them to this point. One thing all of them agreed on is that the RSB class was a greater outlet for them to let it all out and help them in "Fighting Back Against Parkinson's", the motto of Rock Steady Boxing."
