Thanksgiving is a yearly reminder to remember what we are grateful for throughout the year. Many families share a meal and everyone takes a turn telling why they’re thankful. Most people likely say they’re grateful for similar things: family, friends, a job, a place to live, their health. But as I sat down to write this blog, I realized there’s something I sometimes take for granted, but am truly thankful for: the YMCA.

The YMCA was always part of my life as I was growing up. From soccer, to babysitting class, to swim team; I learned different things and met new people. I was pushed to be out of my comfort zone.

In college, I started working at YMCA Camp Kern. I’m especially grateful for camp, because it’s where I discovered how important it was to be myself. I learned how to become comfortable and confident in my own skin. I became more independent, responsible and resourceful. I also made friends that I am still in contact with, 16 years later. I learned how to make the most mundane things magical for kids. I’m grateful my kids will soon be able to experience the amazingness that is Camp Kern.

I also worked at a YMCA in Lexington, Kentucky, during and after I completed school. I formed relationships with people I would not have otherwise met. I became friends with people of different backgrounds and cultures. I gained new leadership skills while coaching soccer and swim team.

When I returned to Dayton, I started working out, as well as working, at the West Carrollton branch. I loved meeting new people while in the wellness center. I found the best workout class (if you haven’t tried a class with Dawn yet, you’re missing out!), where people motivate me- and each other.

I’m grateful that my son has taken swim lessons with me at the YMCA. I’m grateful for the people who push me to work a little harder during fitness class. I’m grateful to have a place where my family can go to swim and play. I’m grateful knowing that anytime I walk into a YMCA, I’m greeted with a smile.

What about the YMCA are you grateful for?
