Keeping Holiday Stress Low

22 November 2022

By Susan Hickey

Every year the holidays sneak up on us. Somehow, we suddenly go from fall hayrides and leisurely bonfires to packed calendars and lengthy shopping lists. The end of the year inevitably produces a lot of stress in our lives.  Every year, I vow to make this season simpler and less stressful, but frequently I fail to follow through. This time, I’m going to follow these tips to help keep the stress under control – maybe these suggestions will help you as well.

  • Simplify the shopping. Gift cards are a wonderful way to show appreciation and share joy with others.  There are so many options for gift cards and they are easy to purchase. They also require minimal space when packing to travel out of town. Here’s a thought – consider gifting your local friends a personal training plan at the Y. They will definitely appreciate that come January! Find out more here.
  • Create a budget.  Make a list and set dollar amount limits now – and stick to them. Financial worries can be managed by setting boundaries early in the season.
  • Make healthy food choices. It’s no secret that holiday food can be high in calories and fat.  Indulging in special holiday treats can bring joy, but too much of a good thing can make us feel sluggish and sap our energy. Consume holiday treats in moderation, and consider incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Even being attentive to water intake can help your overall well-being. Talk to a YMCA dietician for more suggestions – learn about that here.
  • It’s ok to say “no.” This time of year demands so much of our time and energy, not to mention our money. Honor your personal limits and choose what projects you will support this year. More importantly, be ok with telling others that you have reached your maximum commitments.
  • Stay active. Moderate exercise helps us feel more energetic and ready to tackle that to-do list. Maybe this isn’t an optimal time to start training for a marathon, but it’s still important to find an hour for a yoga class or a brisk outdoor walk. Hint – enter this time into your digital calendar, because it’s just as important as that holiday party. Check the YMCA group class schedules here to find something that you will enjoy.
  • Take time for yourself. Again, put it in your calendar.  We are all better off when we keep our own cups full and therefore are more able to meet family obligations.

There are a number of ways to help keep holiday stress manageable. Your local YMCA can help you accomplish this and much more this holiday season!
