National Apple Cider Day

One of my favorite special fall treats is a hot mug of spiced apple cider.  There is just something about the smell of cinnamon and spices and the warm, sweet taste that is so soothing after a chilly fall walk in the leaves.  Did you know that National Apple Cider Day is November 18th?  I’m grateful for a special day dedicated to this delicious drink.  Even better, apple cider surprisingly has some health benefits (and not just in the vinegar variety that we hear so much about).

Since apple cider is mostly the juice of the apple, the benefits are not quite the same as eating a whole apple.  However, cider does contain anti-oxidants called polyphenols that help to decrease inflammation and indirectly decrease your risk of heart disease due to preventing plaque buildup in your arteries.  Polyphenols appear promising in decreasing occurrence of some cancers, type II diabetes, and thrombolic strokes.  Since cider is mostly water, it is a good option for hydration, especially when you are feeling ill, because it is easily drinkable particularly when warm! 

Apple cider, because it is not filtered like juice, contains some of the pulp of the apple.  Therefore it contains some pectin, a soluble fiber.  Fiber can help manage irritable bowel syndrome, decrease high cholesterol, and suppress appetite by helping you feel full.

Apple cider is a good source of potassium. Potassium is key in helping manage blood pressure.  Cider also contains small amounts of vitamin C and iron, and one ½ cup counts as one of your daily recommended fruit servings.

Now, what about that apple cider vinegar?  Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is basically apple cider that has been left to ferment.  There is preliminary research to support claims that ACV may help with weight loss and type II diabetes management among other things.  However, the research is limited and inconclusive at this point.  There are also risks to ingesting too much ACV, so definitely discuss with your health care provider.

If you are looking to celebrate National Apple Cider Day, here’s a great recipe to try.  This would be a perfect treat to take along on a nice evening walk.

6 cups apple cider

1/2 tsp whole cloves

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

3 cinnamon sticks

In a 3 qt saucepan, heat above ingredients over medium high heat until boiling.  Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 min.  Strain to remove cloves and cinnamon if desired before serving.  Serve hot.
