Do you make a New Year’s resolution to exercise more, lose weight or generally become healthier? A lot of people do. It’s why the gym suddenly becomes more crowded in January! But you might notice that by March, things are back to normal as people slowly stop coming so often.

It’s easy to lose your motivation. Things get busy, working out is not as big of a priority. But there’s something that might help you stay on track!

Have you tried the YMCA’s group exercise classes yet? I enjoy them a lot more than just running on the treadmill or using the elliptical, for several reasons.

  • First, they are fun! The instructors mix it up, so each class seems like something new.
  • Another reason- they will motivate you more than just coming to the gym on your own! When you start attending classes, you’ll meet others who will likely inspire you to keep coming (or they might-kindly- give you a hard time when you miss a class or two!). The instructors also create a great atmosphere.
  • They hype you up! and keep you working hard throughout the class. The music can be a lot of fun, too!

There are so many different classes to try, so there is something for everyone. Cycling classes are always a great workout. There are numerous different boot-camp style classes that combine cardio and strength. If you’re looking for something especially fun that doesn’t feel like working out, dance your way into better shape with Zumba! If you want a class to help you feel a little more centered, check out yoga or Pilates. You really can’t go wrong with any of the classes the YMCAs have to offer!

When you go, introduce yourself to the instructor. Let him or her know if you have any injuries or health issues, so they can help you make any needed modifications. They’ll help you get what equipment you need and adjust it properly.

Don’t be intimidated! There is usually someone new in the classes I attend, and we try to make the person feel welcome. Try to go a couple times. If you’re still not sure or if it’s not for you, check out something else.

Oh- and did I mention, group exercise classes are FREE with your membership?

So… what are you waiting for?
