Be the Blessing
By: June Owens
What a year! These past 12 months have been unlike any other we have faced in most of our lifetimes. And though ‘social distancing’ has been the most used phrase, it’s time we realize that we can hug the world simply through the time we give. And even better, there are many covid-19 specific and virtual opportunities available, making this a great time to get involved.
I used to think that volunteering was something I would do later in life, maybe when I retired and had more time on my hands. Or maybe I would wait until I had a little more money in my bank account. Perhaps I should wait until my kids were grown. Then, in a blink of an eye, I found myself in a position where I needed people around me to step up and help. I relied on numerous volunteers. Those moments were life changing for me and provided the jumpstart for my heart to simply be the blessing for others. The returns I’ve had since far outweigh the time I have ever invested.
So, let me challenge you in this. Whether you are in a season of plenty or one that is lacking, start volunteering today, this week, or this month. Make it happen. Visit the website Volunteer Match and start your search. Take the first step and look for the subtle shift in your personal life because as you help change the life of others, you too are evolving.
- You become a relationship builder… We could probably all agree that technology has, to some extent, taken the true connection piece out of our lives. When we commit to working alongside others towards a common goal, true bonds are formed. You also get the great opportunity to really live out family values when you volunteer WITH them and set your children up to make this a lifelong commitment.
- You are now a world changer… Many faith-based organizations, museums, and social service organizations heavily rely on volunteers. These places often pick up where other programs have left off. Without people being willing to give of their time, skills, and finances, people and animals in our community would not have adequate support in their time of need. The one person that you teach English or possibly helped write a business plan may be lifted out of a situation that positively affects many generations to come.
- You have true purpose… When we are not being paid for something, we generally choose activities that are really close to our heart. This is true in our volunteer choices as well. And when we are led by passionate intention, our efforts are contagious and often multiplied, making a much bigger impact than we initially realized.
- You are healthier… Many studies, like the one completed by United Healthcare, have found that stress levels decrease, and our immune systems are strengthened when we stop thinking about our own problems and focus on others. A large 94% indicated that volunteering improved their overall mood. WOW! That in itself is a reason to get started. You can read the full report at United Health Care.
So, what are you waiting for? Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!
