Making Memories For Mother's Day

26 April 2018

By: Betsy Shober

Each year, on a special Sunday in May, many of us make time to celebrate Mother's Day with family and friends. This day of celebration is focused on honoring all the very deserving mother figures in our lives, and our celebrations are often steeped in traditions of food, flowers, and fun. We pay special visits, we give & receive gifts of flower bouquets, or maybe we even enjoy the ever-popular "breakfast in bed" from the kids. These are all wonderful ways to feel recognized or to show appreciation, but it's the memories we share with each other that truly make this day special.

In the tradition of honoring moms and making memories, read on to find some unique and creative ways to celebrate Mother’s Day this year. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new tradition of your own!

The Food:

Mothers are providers, and nourishment is a foundation of motherhood. So, would it even be a proper Mother's Day celebration without food? Of course not! Try taking on a new food tradition by finding a  fun, local spot to enjoy a meal with Mom. If you're celebrating with family, many restaurants offer a Mother's Day Brunch (and it's wise to make a reservation just in case.) One local restaurant in Yellow Springs, OH with a great Mother's Day Brunch is Ellie's inside the Mills Park Hotel. Their brunch offers family style seating, a creative menu, and great atmosphere with dining inside or out on the porch.

If you're celebrating with adults, try visiting a local winery the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This is a great way to spend an evening, enjoying appetizers and conversation while sampling varieties of local wine. Many wineries even have live music on the patio each weekend. There are quite a few places in the area to try, including Brandeberry Winery in Enon, OH and Caesar Creek Vineyards in Xenia, OH.

The Flowers:

Flowers for Mother's Day are a classic, but there's more than one way to incorporate flowers into the celebration. For a fun way to make a new memory, try a Flower Arrangement Class from a local flower shop. Many shops in the Dayton area offer these as a social event, providing the flowers, the vases, and the hands-on instruction to help you create your very own masterpiece. This year, the City of Fairborn and Hollon Flowers are co-hosting a "Mother's Day Blooms" event, and The Flowerman offers DIY parties in the Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus, OH areas.

Another way incorporate flowers is to spend a flower-filled day outside with the family. Try visiting a local zoo, botanical garden, or arboretum. Cox Arboretum in Miamisburg, OH is an excellent option, and the Butterfly House & Garden opens on the first of May each year. There's nothing quite like seeing the butterflies and flowers blooming in nature, and the pictures & memories you capture will live on much longer than the traditional bouquet.

The Fun:

Mother's Day celebrations aren't just about the food and the flowers. Moms everywhere deserve to have some fun! For an adventurous, kid-free celebration, try organizing a Mom’s Night Out at an amusement park with your own mother, or with your mom-group of friends. Kings Island in Mason, OH offers discounted admission after 4pm, and you'll feel like a kid again as soon as you enter the park. Don’t forget to take group photos before the night ends!

Finally, there are a lot of activities you can do with your family to celebrate. Going for a family swim at your local YMCA, playing a few rounds of putt-putt golf, or even having a glow-in-the-dark bowling night with the kids are great ways to get some family time and togetherness. Of course, remember to take pictures of your memory-making adventures so you can revisit them on Mother’s Day next year.
