Senior Showcase Returns to the Dayton YMCA

2 August 2021

By Jamie Kaun

For more than 12 years, seniors in the Dayton area have been enjoying friendly competition through 20+ activities like basketball, swimming, trivia, volleyball, pickleball, dance, and more during the YMCA’s Senior Showcase.

This much-loved annual event was put on hold for 2020 due to COVID restrictions, but a mini version begins this month.

“It takes months to successfully plan a full Senior Showcase,” says Bambi Puckett, executive director for the West Carrollton YMCA branch. “We had to plan around COVID restrictions, so this year’s Senior Showcase features activities that allows for distancing and safe interactions.”

The 2021 Senior Showcase features three events, including pickleball, corn toss and beach volleyball.

The event schedule is:

  • Pickleball –Aug. 18-20, Xenia YMCA
  • Corn toss – Sept. 10, Kleptz YMCA
  • Beach volleyball – Sept. 16, Coffman YMCA

More details on the event and registration can be found here.

Traditionally, 700-800 (some years, up to 1,000) seniors from all Dayton-area YMCA branches participate in the Senior Showcase. Every year, there’s a theme volunteers craft decorations for that adds to the festivities and excitement. This year’s theme is Candy Land.

“This event gives our seniors of all abilities a once-a-year opportunity to come together to socialize and build friendships. While we had to plan for a scaled down version of our traditional Senior Showcase in 2021, we plan to bring back the full event in the spring of 2022,” says Puckett.

The Senior Showcase is open to all YMCA members age 55 and older. Not a member? You can find more information on individual and family memberships here. Some secondary insurances even pay for senior memberships through programs such as Silver Sneakers, Renew Active and Silver and Fit. Call any branch for more information.
