Strong Kids Triathlon

Four kids with their metals from the Strong Kids Triathlon

By Susan Hickey

As a mom of three kids, I’m always looking for more fun ways to keep my kids active. Kids, by nature, tend to enjoy playing in a pool, riding their bikes, and running around. Therefore, a great local event for kids is the YMCA Strong Kids Triathlon  Now in its 15th year, the triathlon encourages kids as young as 5 years old up to age 12 to combine their skills in swimming, biking, and running into a fun race. My kids have participated in this event for the past few years and it’s a highlight of their summer.

The kids are divided into age groups and the distances they need to cover vary depending on their ages. The older they get, the more challenging the event is, while still being very manageable for many children.  Exact race distances can be found here. Safety precautions are in place particularly during the swim, which takes place in a “lazy river” where the water is shallow throughout, flotation aids are permitted, and lifeguards accompany the kids through the route. Helmets are required during the bike portion.

This year’s event takes place on the morning of August 6th at the YMCA at the Heights with the swim portion at the Kroger Aquatic Center, located behind the YMCA. Entry fee includes lots of goodies including a finisher’s medal and a t-shirt. Age group awards will also be presented.  After race refreshments are available, and Kona Ice will be on site as well! A big perk is sticking around after the race to enjoy the Kroger Aquatic Center, which is an incredible swimming pool experience, at a discounted rate.

Helpers will be available to assist kids during transitions if needed but parents can help get them set up in the transition area.  Some bikes and helmets are available if needed to borrow.

My kids have enjoyed their experiences at the Strong Kids Triathlon. They were really proud of finishing a challenging activity that is pretty unique to the area for this age group.  Even better, they had fun doing it.

For more information, check out the YMCA website here. Early registration is encouraged, because the event will be capped at 300 participants.  Hope to see you there!
