Veterans Day is Friday, November 11, 2022. According to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the first celebration using the term Veterans Day was held in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947. After some changes in the celebration date, it’s been held on November 11 since 1978.  The VA describes it as “A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

How will you be observing the holiday? There’s numerous events happening throughout the Miami Valley for you to take part. Check with the city/organization holding the event to ensure it’s still happening, in case of inclement weather.

Beavercreek: The city is hosting a Veteran’s Day Ceremony at Veterans’ Memorial Park on November 11 from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Centerville: The city will be hosting a Veteran’s Day Ceremony on November 11 at 11 a.m. at Stubbs Park.

Centerville: Check out the annual Veteran’s Exhibit at the Centerville Library, paying tribute to local veterans and military history. The exhibit will be on display Friday, November 11 – Sunday, November 13 during normal operating hours.

Fairborn: The Miami Valley History Museum is holding a Veterans Day Open House on November 11 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Wright Patterson Air Force Base: The National Museum of the United States Air Force is hosting Plane Talks on November 11 from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. You can interact with subject matter experts, including veterans, stationed near aircraft and exhibits.

Not wanting to attend an event? You could make cards for veterans, or write thank you cards. If you know a veteran, give them a call to thank them for their service. You can also volunteer at a nursing home and spend time with residents there. You could also make treats to deliver to the VA.

The YMCA is appreciative of all veterans for their service!
