YMCA getting new logo, shifting focus

DAYTON — The YMCA of Greater Dayton will be undergoing changes to meet with its new brand strategy starting in 2011.

The strategy, which focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, was announced by the YMCA of the USA July 12.

YMCAs across the country are expected to fully transition to the new brand within five years. In Dayton, the process will begin after Jan. 1, 2011.

Note to the Village People: The lyrics in your biggest hit need an update. The organization previously known as the Y.M.C.A. is henceforth to be called “the Y.”

One of the nation’s most iconic nonprofit organizations, founded 166 years ago in England as the Young Men’s Christian Association, is undergoing a major rebranding, adopting as its name the nickname everyone has used for generations.

Register now for the YMCA of Greater Dayton's third annual summer basketball camp brought to you by TSS Photography of the Miami Valley. The camp will run from July 12-16 and will be held at a north and south site.

The north site will be at Cloud Park in Huber Heights and the south site will be held at the Coffman YMCA in Springboro.

Camp Kern celebrates centennial

TURTLECREEK TWP. — For 100 years, youths from southwestern Ohio have attended Camp Kern for a chance to get away from home for a week and enjoy the outdoors.

Last weekend, nearly 1,000 people — former campers, counselors, and directors — returned to the camp, which is owned by the Greater Dayton YMCA, to celebrate its centennial with a four-day event that accentuated “The Spirit of Kern.”
