Volunteer of the Year Award Presented to Huber Heights Supporters

25 April 2019

[Miami Valley, OH 4/14/19] – The YMCA of Greater Dayton is pleased to recognize the Wayne High School Super Seniors as the YMCA at the Heights volunteers of the year.

The Wayne High School Super Senior Program is designed to help students with a variety of disabilities successfully transition to adult life. All students who are receiving special education services, have earned all the credits they need for graduation and are between the ages of 18-22 are eligible to participate.

The program focuses on 3 key areas of transition; post-secondary education, competitive employment and independent living. Partnering with organizations like the YMCA is a key element in the success of students. The volunteer opportunities allow the students to engage in authentic, real life, work experiences involving customers, supervisors and fulfilling responsibilities just like an employee.

In addition, other skills such as communication, time management, travel training on the RTA, as well as personal traits such as self-confidence self-advocacy are all implemented while utilizing this opportunity.

The Super Senior staff and students are proud of the relationship with the staff at the YMCA at the Heights and hope to continue to build this relationship in the future.

The award was presented during the YMCA's 148th Annual Meeting at the David H. Ponitz Center at Sinclair in Dayton on March 14th. The event raised over $26,000 for the YMCA's Annual Campaign and LIVESTRONG at the Y program. The night consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.
