"It's bringing the community together and putting health and fitness into that and making sure the kids are active and having fun and making friends," said YMCA Executive Director Gayle Horton.

Forty-five percent of Ohio children were eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches this past school year through the National School Lunch Program. But when school lets out for the summer, more than 800,000 children are potentially left without the ability to get regular meals.

Community foundations in the Greater Dayton area boosted their assets by 9 percent last year to more than $620.7 million, which officials said was aided by an improved stock market and could help more local organizations in need.
